A truly innovative solution to wastewater management.

Construction for the new Cortland Sheaffer System-DeKalb County, IL

Construction for the new Cortland Sheaffer System-DeKalb County, IL

Sheaffer Systems cost-effectively reclaim and beneficially reuse municipal wastewater, offering municipalities an innovative alternative to traditional wastewater treatment facilities. Sheaffer Systems can serve a wide range of dwelling units (between 30 and 8,000 homes) and are often sized to accommodate expected future growth.

Since Sheaffer Systems eliminate the need for routine sludge removal and require few moving parts, our systems typically have significantly lower operational costs and last longer than traditional wastewater treatment facilities. Furthermore, our zero-discharge wastewater treatment methods protect your streams and rivers, and ensure their continued health for future generations.

Given the environmentally friendly technology used by Sheaffer Systems, the permitting process for a Sheaffer System is simpler than for sludge-producing, river-discharging treatment facilities.

Case Study: Town of Cortland, IL

RESIDENTIAL UNITS: 4,826
AVERAGE FLOW: 1.5 MGD
TOTAL AREA: 3,500 acres

In 2003, the Town of Cortland, IL found that its sewer line had reached its capacity, and as a result, the town could not grow. After careful research of the available options, Cortland decided that a Sheaffer System would best meet its wastewater management needs and enable sustainable growth in Cortland.

Of the 1.5 MGD planned for Cortland, only 300,000 gallons per day will serve existing homes; the remaining 1.2 MGD will serve the many planned new developments in the Town of Cortland. Wastewater from the new developments will be reused for irrigation of open space on the property of the new developments.
